6. Writing a Patent Application

Preparing a successful patent application:
If you’re going to spend your time and money to secure patents on your inventions, make sure your patents are high quality and "bulletproof". It may sound strange, but it’s fact: "it costs less to write, file and prosecute a patent application with a broad scope through and attorney, than it does to patent it yourself." The reason is clear: if you patent it yourself you’ll save a few thousand dollars, but you almost always end up with a worthless, easy to design around patent. Meanwhile, you will have squandered much more on developing an invention that cannot be protected against knock-offs. Our expert inventors will show you why you want a highly qualified patent attorney on your team.

What you will learn:
The patent applications you will write will be broad and effective:

  • Why (and when) you should write your applications
  • Why your attorney should file your applications
  • How to best use your patent attorney
  • How to use story-telling methodology
  • How to properly describe your invention
  • The importance of patent drawings
  • Claims writing - why it's part science, part art
  • The patenting sequence: prosecution to issuance
  • About possible law changes; preparing for the future
